So You Want to Take Your Kid to Haunted Houses, Haunted Mazes, and Haunted Hayrides in Michigan
Good for you! You’re braver than me.
Here’s what you need to know about taking your teens, tweens, or kids to a Haunted House near you: One size does not fit all.
Different haunted attractions have different rules. We asked around and did our research and found that almost all places will not allow you to carry a child through a haunted attraction for safety reasons. You’re also going to be required to wear close-toed shoes and won’t be able to use your phone – so plan accordingly.
Parental judgment is the biggest “rule” that we found when it comes to an age limit for these haunted houses in Michigan. You know your child the best. In my own family, my nine-year-old is gangbusters for getting freaked out, where my 15 year old wants nothing to do with it. This is definitely not the time for forced family fun…
With all that said, here’s what we found for age limits at some of the top Haunted Attractions in Michigan:
New Salem Corn Maze

What is it?
This farm located outside of Grand Rapids is family-friendly during the day and frightful at night.
Spooky Options:
- Witches Woods: The New Salem Corn Maze “Witches of New Salem” haunted woods is a frightening experience with over 20 attractions and dozens of actors and props. Stroll down one of the two paths in the Witches Woods. It’s up to you on “witch” path to take, whether you take the “Twisted” or the “Wicked” you will scream around every corner.
- Haunted Corn Maze: You will be stalked + spooked by their team of corn stalkers as you twist your way through their corn maze.
- Zombie Attack: Each participant will be armed with a deadly paintball gun and orders to defend New Salem at all costs in an interactive Zombie Hunt!
Age Limit: They don’t have an age limit but they don’t recommend for kids under 12.

Niles Scream Park
What is it?
Niles Scream Park offers 44 acres of blood-curdling fear! Six major attractions are rebuilt each year to provide you with completely new and unique shows.
Attractions include Niles Haunted House – there are over 100 different paths through the attraction and it’s impossible to see it all with less than seven trips. The Field of Screams – It starts with a visit to a New Orleans style cemetery. After that you will encounter mazes, clowns, monsters and zombies. If you are really lucky, you may make it to the final tunnel and hope the dark will keep the monsters off your tracks long enough for you to get out! Haunted Hayride – a tractor drawn wagon and ride the Dark Terror-tory Haunted Hayride. The trail is approximately a mile long and filled with more than 30 sets that are woven together into a narrative that changes each year.
Bonus – There’s a Midway filled with games, roaming monsters, concessions, and other scary delights.
Age Limit
This is where parental guidance is required. Although they do have many small children go through the Haunted House and are delighted, they don’t recommend it. If your child is afraid of the dark, then definitely not. The hayride and the midway attractions are not recommended for children under the age of 6.
They offer a “No Scare Zone” on the Midway to serve as a safe haven for anyone who needs to escape the scary. This area is free of charge and perfect for chaperones, young children and of course “scaredy cats.”
It is not permitted at any time to carry a child through any of the attractions. Inside the attractions you will experience uneven floors, complete darkness and many scares that may startle you. For these reasons it is not safe to carry a child. If your child is unable to walk on their own, they are not allowed inside the attractions. If they are too scared to continue through one of the attractions, stop an actor and ask to be escorted out of the attraction.

Abandoned Acres Farm

What is it?
Our corn mazes are about 1/4 mile long with animatronics, actors and startle scares.
The actors cannot touch the patrons. There is immersive music throughout… There are two different themed corn mazes for this year.
Age Limit
We leave it up to parents since you know your kids best.

Ghostship Manistee
What is it?
Haunted “House” aboard the SS City of Milwaukee covering five decks. Includes stairs, costumed actors jumping out at you, props, and more.
Age Limit: It’s up to the parents. We don’t recommend under 7.

Factory of the Dead

What is it? Factory of the Dead Haunted House features 2 Attractions…. 1.) Nightmare at 906 and … 2.) Zombie Outbreak.
Age Limit: There is no age limit. It is pg-13 rated but they wouldn’t recommend it for those under 12.

Erebus Haunted Attraction

What is it?
Erebus is an indoor haunted house that offers 4 stories – 3 above ground and 1 underground with just over a half-mile walk inside the attraction. Open rain or shine.
Age Limit
This attraction is not recommended for children under 13. We have five-year-olds “loving it” all the way through and we’ve also seen 25-year-olds wet themselves and faint. It all depends on the person.

Jackson’s Underworld
What is it?
Age Limit:
We recommend 12. We have had a lot of younger children come through. It is really dependent on the child. We have seen 5 year olds go through laughing and having fun. We rely on the parent’s judgement.

Screams in the Dark

What is it? Multiple haunted attractions located on the grounds of the Northwestern Michigan Fair. Includes, Haunted Hayride and Haunted Trail.
Age Limit
Recommended ages are 10& Up for the Hayride & Trail – 14& Up for “Grimfell Asylum” “Pandemonium”, and “Delirium”
This is one of the most asked questions at our attractions – Our best answer is “You know your child better than we do” – Some children do well….others not so well.
The Hayride & Haunted Trail are intended to be more “Family” friendly – There are still plenty of scares but they are not as intense as those in the other two attractions.
We require that all children must be able to walk on their own – You may not carry your child through any of the attractions.

Bestmaze Corn Maze Trail of Terror

What is it? The Trail of Terror is now over half a mile long winding through the corn with turns, fog, shacks, spinning vortex tunnel, and more. For those who do not like the scary stuff: The regular corn maze will still be available on the other side of same field with no scary people in it.
Age Limit
We do not set an age limit, but don’t recommend anyone under 10 yr. Also, we do not allow a person to carry a child through for the safety of the child.

Terrified Forest
What is it?
A mile long haunted forest filled with actors, props, creatures and more. It takes about 45 minutes to make your way through.
Age Limit:
We love scaring and entertaining all ages. However we do recommend that this is not suitable for under 13. Use your best judgement…we are not responsible for sleepless children after walking through the woods.The night creatures will not hold back.
